Be\ncareful when pressing, as most fusible fleece will melt and stick to the iron\nsole plate if you press directly on the fleece side. So always remember to use\na pressing cloth when you press on the fleece side during construction steps.\nUsing fusible fleece It is essential to first fuse some regular interfacing to\nthe wrong side of your fabric. The wavy (and ugly) aspect that the fabric\ntakes when you apply fusible fleece directly. Applying a layer of regular\nfusible interfacing first will prevent this. The other reason is that,\nparticularly for bags, this extra thickness of stabilizer further improves the\nfirmness and durability of the bag. However, note that if the fusible fleece\nis only applied to the lining of your bag and not to the outer fabric. Steps\n1. Fuse a regular interfacing to the wrong side of your fabric piece. 2. Cut\nyour fusible fleece to the dimensions of your piece minus the seam allowances.\nIt is important to remove the seam allowances from the fleece, this will\nreduce the bulk at the seams and the overall finish will be neater. 3. Center\nyour fleece onto the wrong side of your fabric, previously interfaced and\ncooled down, fusible side against the wrong side of the fabric. Leaving an\nequal amount of seam allowance all around. 4. Spread a damp pressing cloth\nover the fleece. As a damp cloth you can use pretty much any cotton that won’t\ndiscolor (pillowcase, bed sheet fabric, …) 5. Apply your hot iron (set on wool\nor cotton without steam) on the damp pressing cloth for 15 seconds on each\nportion of your fabric piece, until you’ve gone over it entirely. Do not glide\nyour iron : every 15 seconds, lift it and put it down on the adjacent portion.\nTwo Thicknesses Available Choose the right thickness according to different\napplications Lightweight thickness of 1 mm(0.04 inch) Medium weight thickness\nof 2 mm(0.08 inch) Which side of the interfacing is fusible? Usually, if you\nlook at fusible interfacing really closely you will notice specks of glue on\nthe fusible side of the interfacing, and sometimes you can tell the fusible\nside by the slightly bumpy texture of the adhesive. The fusible side of the\ninterfacing has a slight shininess from the glue. Use a Pressing Cloth Be\ncareful when pressing, as most fusible fleece will melt and stick to the iron\nsole plate if you press directly on the fleece side. So always remember to use\na pressing cloth when you press on the fleece side during construction steps.\nRead more What is fusible interfacing? Fusible interfacing is a very\ninteresting material used for sewing, quilting and craft projects with all\nkinds of fabric. You fuse it to the wrong (unseen) side of the fabric to give\nit additional strength, support or required shape. It’s commonly used to\nstiffen collars and cuffs, reinforce facings and buttonholes, strengthen\nwaistbands in garment construction. It’s widely used in sewing bags and\npurses, it’s also essential for quilters, it can be used for preventing fabric\nfraying, etc. Types of fusible interfacing All types of fusible interfacing\nhave a heat activated adhesive material on one side or on both sides which\nbonds to the fabric when ironed. Fusible interfacing can have different\nstructure and thickness in order to be used with different fabrics. 1. Non-\nwoven fusible interfacing is the most common type everybody uses. It’s a pure\nproduct of the chemical industry – it’s not fabric, it will not unravel.\nUsually, it has no grain, and because of this, it can be cut in any direction,\nwhich is great because you can use every bit of it in a very economical way.\nBut sometimes it has the grain though and then manufacturers advise cutting it\naccording to the grain line. It doesn’t have any stretch, and can be used with\nany woven fabric. I don’t recommend using it for knit fabric unless you want\nto reduce fabric stretch. 2. Woven fusible interfacing is a kind of fabric –\nit has a lengthwise and crosswise grain. It’s made from warp and weft fibers\ninterwoven together. It’s not widely used in home sewing. Most of the time\nthey make it not stretchy,, but sometimes it can have some stretch property\nalso. This type works well with woven fabric. 3. All the above types of\nfusible interfacing can be further classified as lightweight, medium weight\nand heavyweight. Lightweight is used with lightweight, delicate fabrics to add\nstrength and durability. Medium weight works for a wide variety of fabrics,\nand heavyweight is great for adding structure to purses or brims of hats.\nGenerally, the heavier the fabric you are using, the heavier the interfacing\nyou need. However, your interfacing should be slightly lighter weight than the\nfabric you are using. Is fusible fleece the same as interfacing? Yes, fusible\nfleece is another type of interfacing. It’s quite thick, thicker than regular\nfusible interfacing, 100% polyester fleece with adhesive on one side. It’s\nused for the fabric to hold a specific shape. It easily adheres to fabric.\nFusible Fleece Non-Woven Interfacing Woven Interfacing Material 100% Polyester\n100% Polyester 100% Polyester Width 39 inch 39 inch 59 inch Length 1 Yard 2\nYard 1, 2, 4 Yard Fusible fleece is a stabilizer that can be adhered to any\nfabric, wood, or cardboard to add loft to fabrics, softness and thickness.\nThis material is typically made of polyester and features heat-activated\nadhesive bumps on either one or both sides. Fusible fleece can add a\nprofessional, finished look to many of your sewing projects.
